How to improve the English reading level of the junior high school students has been thetopic concerned by both researchers and English teachers. The students’ reading ability isquite poor. Here are some possible reasons. They may have a poor vocabulary or a frailgrammatical foundation. They may lack interest in reading and foreign culture or don’t havegood reading habits. They may fail to use reading strategies or get good marks in readingcomprehension. As far as I know, teachers has taken measures to change the situation andimprove students’ reading ability based on all the above-mentioned reasons except readingstrategies. In fact, in daily teaching activities of reading comprehension, teachers spend mostof their time and energy in guiding students to grasp the language knowledge andgrammatical items. Most teachers don’t have time to develop students’ reading strategiessystematically under academic pressure or they just teach with leaving time for students topractice and some are even not conscious of it. They expect that students can acquire readingskills and strategies naturally through the accumulation of language knowledge and massiveexercise. Nevertheless, according to the survey, quite a number of students are not confidentin their reading strategies. This thesis, on the basis of a brief introduction of the definition ofreading and reading models as well as the classification of reading strategies and the trainingof learning strategies and reading strategies at home and abroad, explained the characteristicand application of skimming, scanning, predicting and guessing. At the same time, the authorproposed her own reading strategies training methods based on Oxford’s learning strategiestraining methods and Anderson’s Active Teaching and EPU Teaching Mode in Dalian. It isdivided into five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction. There is a brief introduction ofthe significance of the research of reading strategies. The second chapter is the training oflearning strategies at home and abroad. The third chapter is the theoretical framework aboutthe definition of reading as well as the three reading models and schema The fourth chapter isthe introduction four kinds of reading strategies and its application in reading comprehensionin the exam. It also stresses the training methods of reading strategies. The last chapter is theconclusion.
