Reading ability is the basic capability of history. It is the foundation of students learning to learn and independent learning, the individual using existing history knowledge, with the visual organ to understand text symbols or the content of nonverbal symbols.It can finish the history reading mission effectively, and also can improve the understanding of the history. For a long time, under the condition of exam-oriented education mode,history reading ability is ignored. It is not conducive to improve the high school’s history teaching and learning ability. In 2003, the course reform promoted the college entrance examination’s innovation. And also contributed to the high school history teachers and high school students to focus on the history reading ability.The new reform of college entrance examination emphasis on examining the ability more than knowledge, especially the history reading ability.Meanwhile, the history reading ability is also particularly important to cultivate innovative talents and improve the talent quality Therefore, it is imperative to enhance the history reading ability of senior high school students.This article consists of three parts,introduction, text and epilogue. The introduction mainly includes the selected topic background, research purpose and research significance, overseas and domestic research status,the research content methods and so on. The text includes four parts, the connotation of historical reading ability, structure and culture value; history reading ability’s requirement for the university entrance exam (for instance, college entrance examination from 2007 to 2014 in Shandong province); and the improvement countermeasure of history reading ability for high school. Epilogue part puts forward how to improve the high school’ history reading ability via the discussion between the high school’s history reading ability and importance.Through the discussion of this paper, the first conclusion is that high school students has poor interesting for history reading, no clear reading purpose, bad reading habits, negative emotion, reading disabilities, etc. While,not only the teachers’ professional attainment, teachers emphasis and teaching methods,but also schools, families, and the teaching material can also affect the history reading ability.According to the factors which affect high school students’ history reading ability, this paper puts forwards the countermeasure to improve the history reading ability by perfecting teachers’ professional quality, cultivating the students’ interesting in reading, exchanging teaching methods, training reading, developing reading habits, and based on the basic knowledge and so on At the same time, the history reading ability’s improvement can’t be achieved overnight.
