According to Full-time Compulsory General High School English curriculumstandards (trial version,2011),the main goals of English education courses are toinspire students’ interests in English, promote students to build up self-confidence,develop good learning habits and grasp effective learning strategies. Nowadays groupcooperative learning is a good way of learning English. It is a kind of teachingorganization form of achieving objectives and developing students’ abilities ofcooperating with others. Improving learning efficiency, developing students’ goodlearning habits and being volunteering to cooperate are the essences of groupcooperative study. Because of the importance of group cooperative learning, mostschools are carrying out this teaching method. And the good experience should bereferred to, but there are some deficiencies in teaching too.This paper investigates the current situation of group cooperative learning inEnglish class, finds out some problems in carrying out the group cooperative learning,and gives some advice on the problems. The result of the investigation shows thatgroup cooperative learning are used in all English classes and students love to learn inthis way. But to some extent, it is not effective. Students have different attitudes tothis teaching method, and sometimes the form of the group cooperative learning is notsuitable for some teaching content. And it is found that it’s hard for teachers to payattention to every group and control the discipline in a large size class whileemploying this teaching method. etc. Thus, this paper, based on the theories ofdomestic and foreign cooperative learning strategies, investigation and observation ofthe cooperation, previous studies in this field and my personal teaching practice,discusses how to carry out group cooperative learning effectively for teachers and theways of developing students’ abilities of cooperating, such as, helping studentsvolunteer to cooperate with others, arousing students’ motivation of cooperation,training students to learn in good ways, developing students self-monitoring abilitiesof learning and organizing class in the right ways.There are five parts in this paper including introduction, literature review,research method, results and discussion, and conclusion.
