The Practicability Research On Forum Theatre Applied To Domestic Violence In The Eyesight Of Social Work

During1970s, most of foreign countries have focused on domestic violence problem. A lot of mature research and professional intervention methods have been developed from marco to micro, such as the legal system and the family structure therapy. However, some decadent ideas like "dirty linen should not outside" have rooted in Chinese mind profoundly. These lead us into the errors that domestic violence problem is so private that others should not intervene. Therefore, this problem becomes a neglected social issue in China. Our country didn’t begin to make relevant researches until1990s. Most of these researches focused on the law of civil and marriage. Meanwhile, some disciplines such as sociology and psychology made a great deal of theoretical and practice researches about domestic violence in different perspectives, including the prevalence, the causes and harms, intervention patterns and so on. All of the effort gave scientific understanding to the public. NGOs and the media also devoted themselves into the knowledge promotion and intervention of domestic violence. Nevertheless, some data shows that the domestic violence problem in China becomes sterner and sterner. This situation attributes to following reasons. Firstly, our country hasn’t issued a special legislation of domestic violence (Taiwan and Hongkong are not included). Secondly, the current researches prefer to study the violence of couple, but overlook the other themes like children and the old of violence or the violence of intergenerational inheritance. Thirdly, the current intervention of psychology or physic is not effective because they still use the traditional methods like psychological consultation or making pathologic diagnosis for the perpetrators. These methods also neglect intervention to family, society or community.Social work, as an occupation to advance the society to be peace and help people develop, provides a set of methods to prevent and solve the domestic violence problem. For multi-aspect intervention, social workers mainly use the methods or technique of psychology combing the manner of case work or community work. Though these professional methods are advantage in the intervention of domestic violence problem, it seems to be too passive and simply when facing such a complicated problem. They rely too much on the old technique and traditional therapy from psychology. Particularly, as the most important of intervention, community work are not effective because of the rigid pattern and simply process.The characteristic of domestic violence decides that the intervention must be comprehensive and scientific. According to the position and advantage of occupation, social workers should develop a mode what is interdiscipline, multi subject, resource integration and powerful operability. Based on this, the author has realized what is Theatre of the Oppressed and the social function and operation of forum theatre as one of the method of Theatre of the Oppressed. In the same time, this study presented two types of community activities as samples from author’s experience. One was the general pattern activity, the other applied the forum theatre to the intervention of domestic violence problem. Comparing these two activities, the author tried to find out the advantage, applying difficulties and availability of forum theatre and then analyze the faultiness of activity to forward the way to deal with this situation. In a word, the overarching purpose of this study is to explore how forum theatre can be used to intervene the domestic violence. What’s more, the author made use of a questionnaire survey in small sample and structureless interview to analyze the future and development of forum theatre applied to the practice of social work. Given all that, the conclusion of this paper is that forum theatre set in community actives can remedy the deficiency of current mode from social work. The forum theatre is effective to exert the function of social work such as prevention, treatment and development in order that social workers can solve the problem better. In addition, promoting forum theatre applied to the practice of social work contributes to enrich the technique and methods for local workers.
