This research using multiple empirical methods explored graduate students’ perspectives about the categories of wisdom, which was separated into three parts:(1) the classification of characters of wisdom;(2) the classification of the wise;(3) the comparison between the characters of wisdom and that of smart. In study1, the classification about characters of wisdom was discussed. Firstly, by widely using the open-questionnaire,49wisdom characters of high frequency were collected. Secondly, subjects were asked to value them, and screened out the top27. Thirdly, another group of subjects freely assorted these27characters. The results of Multi-Dimensional Scaling and Hierarchical Clustering program analysis showed:(1) the classification of "moral wisdom and nature wisdom" did exist in subjects’mind;(2) moral wisdom had been given more attention than nature wisdom.By using classified materials gained from Study1, Study2designed a Go/No-go association task (GNAT) to check out if the subjects had the same classification criteria of the wise. The collection of sensitivity indicator d’and reaction time of these subjects showed:(l)the new designed GNAT had a high validity and reliability;(2) along with the characters of wisdom, the subjects had the same classification criteria to the wise, who could be named as "the wise in the domain of moral" and "the wise in the domain of nature".Study3drew an analogy between the comparisons of "wisdom" and "smart" and the classification results of Study1.Specifically, another group of subjects went through with a questionnaire to differentiate "wisdom" to "smart" in the context of Chinese culture, later compared with the classification results of Study1. The results of classification and the ranks to the characters showed:(1) the subjects had a clear distinguished implicit conception of both "wisdom" and "smart";(2) the characters mainly labeled as "wise feature" were actually belonged to the category of "moral wisdom", whereas those almost labeled as "smart feature" belonged to the category of "nature wisdom";(3)"tolerance" weighed most in moral wisdom,"creativity" weighed most in nature wisdom, however,"benevolence" ranked differently in moral wisdom and nature wisdom. All three studies revealed that:(1) Chinese graduate students had a narrow perspective on the concept of wisdom, specifically, identifying "moral wisdom" as "wisdom","nature wisdom" as "smart";(2) the concept of wisdom were presented as the combination of well-defined characters and archetypal characters in people’s mind;(3) the traditional Chinese culture had a far-reaching impact on the formation of the conception of wisdom to modern youth.
