Grandparent Raising Grandchildren (GRG) is a very common phenomenon in contemporary China, Caused by both traditional and cultural reasons, today’s socio-economic development and social structural changes. This study was to understand university students’ real-world who have GRG experience. The so-called GRG is that grandparents (or other relatives), raise and educate and raise grandchildren. In this study, the selected objects were:(1) day and night taken care of by their grandparents, with parents seldom at home;(2) on working day taken care of by their grandparents and on weekend by their parents to;(3) mainly taken care of by the grandparents, and the parents went home to take care of them now and then. And the selected objects in this study were raised and educated by their grandparents at least for five years. The approach of this study is qualitative research. Qualitative researchers focus on the process of describing, and concern about the uniqueness, individuality, and the subjective views of the selected objects, hoping to be infinitely approach to the real life of selected objects. In this study, I totally interviewed seven university students aged between20-23years old. I did depth interviews with semi-structured interview outline. The interview lasted for three months. I twice interviewed each person for60-90minutes, with mails if they had addication, and ultimately the transcription text was over140,000, and the formation of research log exceeded10,000words.In this study, the interviewed subjects are born basically in the late1980s or in the early1990s. The main reasons of the raised by grandparents were:parents in countryside were trying to avoid family planning or seeking jobs in cities, and the children becomed the so-called "left-behind children". Parents in the city were basically too busy because of the fierce competition and heavy work pressure, and had to send their children to their parents in the countryside or live with their parents in order to be facilitated to take care of their children. Primary wachers are women.Used qualitative research methods to explore the grandparents raising university students’living world from the perspective of attachment and separation-individuation, the results obtained are as follows:(1)There was deep feeling between the grandparents and grandchildren. Despite the parents’absence, grandparents were the children’s initially upbringing and enlightenment, the initial object of attachment, and the life significant others in the first.(2)Before five years old, if the child doesn’t set up a sense of intimacy with their parents, or the sense of security is not enough, then in the after growing course he can take to rebuild the sense of intimacy and the sense of security with their parents. Part of the interviewed objects’ parents took children back to their side when they were about five years old, took care of them, and gradually reestablished a close relationship with their children. But a large part of the children returned to their parents when they grew up. At this time they were often very difficult to accept their parents it is. Their basic experience is:alienation, resentment, accepting the reality, understanding parents, starving for affection and so on.(3)In the process towards independence, the university students who didn’t establish intimacy with their parents felt more sense of insecurity and loneliness. Just because of the unique family patterns, the children raised by the grandparents deal with interpersonal relationships, especially intimate relationships, often involving the influence of their previous life. This study will help the grandparents raising children better to understand themselves, accept themselves, and strive to make a change. It is also good for parents to understand the children raised by grandparents, to see their mentality, to accept the children, and to establish a better relationship with their children.
