Research On Planning And Design Of Colleges’ And Universities’ Rest And Reading Space In Chongqing

The modern education concept, featured with openness, diversification, innovation and research, is widely accepted by the society. With guidance of the modern education concept, study mode of contemporary college students has changed, which becomes more diversified, flexible and initiative and emphasizes communication and interaction between teachers and students and among students. Source ways of knowledge are rich, besides regular study in classroom, outdoor self-study and communication after class is also an important way. It is necessary to have the aid of a certain environment. Nothing but when the environment is provided with a certain specialty, it is capable of motivating development of students’outdoor voluntary action after class.In recent years, under guidance of developing the country through science and education, colleges and universities quickly increase enrollment and our country has invested more in colleges and universities. Colleges and universities in Chongqing also meet a good opportunity for soaring development. A large quantity of reconstruction, expansion and newly-built projects with site selection is successively developed, which presented space prosperity under higher education system. However, the rest and reading space, the main outdoor space for students’study and communication, does not arouse planners’ sufficient attentions. Planning and design of the rest and reading space is always at the last stage of campuses’ planning and design process. The rest and reading space goes contrary to our wishes and causes waste of sites. Therefore, the author considers that it is extremely necessary to systematically study planning and design of colleges’ and universities’ rest and reading space, provide a mode for reference for construction of colleges’ and universities’ rest and reading space, and create more and better environment suitable for studying and communication.Starting from background of production and through retrospection of planning and design of study space and communication space both at home and abroad, this Article finds that most researches at current stage focus on microscopic aspects including space’s environment, dimensions, facilities and users’behaviors and lack considerations in macroscopic aspects, which defines research directions for this Article, that is. making presentations in both microscopic and macroscopic aspects. According to the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" of Chongqing Municipality, the metropolis developed economic circle of Chongqing city proper is oriented as an education, culture and information center, which is an emphasis for construction of colleges and universities in Chongqing. Based on analysis of founding time, categories of subjects, construction status of campuses and administration modes for colleges and universities in the city proper, the most typical8colleges and universities (including6old campuses and4new campuses) in the city proper are selected and brought into research range of this Article.By means of research on relevant contents involved in urban design, campus planning, environmental behavior, environmental space, it summarizes characteristics required by the rest and reading space under directions of each theory and finally summarizes characteristics required by the rest and reading space in both macroscopic and microscopic aspects to establish survey direction for on-site survey. By means of on-site survey method, it takes deep-going research on four aspects including distribution areas, space types, campus traffic and space environment for involved colleges and universities in order to find shortages in the rest and reading space of new and old campuses at the present stage. Through profound introspection, the Author thinks the reasons lie in the following two aspects:first, construction of the rest and reading space in colleges and universities lacks overall layout; second, construction of the rest and reading space in colleges and universities lacks comprehensive consideration for students’ psychological behaviors. Overall design and research on colleges’ and universities" rest and reading space includes four aspects which are space layout, external and internal traffic, ecology and culture. Analysis on elements of the rest and reading space includes both hard elements and soft elements. This Article summarizes and concludes key points for building each kind of rest and reading space and finally summarizes principles for planning and design of colleges’and universities’rest and reading space in Chongqing in order to provide certain theoretical basis and practice foundation for planning and design of colleges’ and universities’ rest and reading space.
