With the development of society and economic globalization, learning English well becomes more and more necessary and important. As is well-known, vocabulary is the basic of the formation and development of the four skills, namely, listening, speaking, reading and writing, and it plays a vital role in English learning. Only when a person has possessed enough vocabulary can he express his opinion precisely and communicate with others freely. The purpose of the research is an attempt to find out an effective way of vocabulary teaching so as to help senior high school students enlarge the quantities of vocabulary and enhance the ability to learn and use English. Based on this purpose, this thesis studies the relationship between cooperative learning and achievements of English vocabulary teaching in senior high school. Three questions are raised in the research:1) Will the method of cooperative learning strengthen the quantity and quality of senior high school students’ vocabulary acquisition?2) What effect will cooperative learning have on senior high school students’ English learning?3) What effect does cooperative learning on students’ learning ability and cooperative ability? The subjects involved in this research were100students in Feng Feng Chun Hua Senior high school in2011. Among the students, they were arranged in two classes:one is the experimental class; the other is the control class. Students in the experimental class are taught with cooperative learning to learn English vocabulary while the students in the control class are used the traditional method to learn the same vocabulary. The thesis includes five chapters. Chapter one is an introduction to the whole thesis, which includes five parts:background of the research, objection and significance of the research, research question, structure of the research and an overview. Chapter two aims to explore the theoretical background for the research and provides an overview of the relevant literature and research relating cooperative learning in vocabulary instruction. It attempts to make the reader understand more about the cooperative learning. Chapter three is an experiment study. In order to make the relationship between cooperative learning and vocabulary teaching clear, this chapter will describe the experiment in following parts, research questions, subjects, research instruments, experiment procedures, experimental data collection. Chapter four is about result analysis and discussion. The author analyzes and discusses the data from the vocabulary pre-test, post-test, the questionnaires, interviews and class observation. Chapter five is conclusion of the research. By researching and analyzing research data, the researcher draws a conclusion that the proper use of cooperative learning in senior high school can improve students’vocabulary learning. The researcher makes some exploration of the application of cooperative learning in English vocabulary learning in the high school. If cooperative learning is made full use of, it can be a very useful teaching strategy to make students not only promoting their vocabulary skills, but also developing series of learning abilities. This thesis is a practice of high school vocabulary teaching, especially for students with learning difficulties. But much research needs to be carried out. The author hopes that more researchers will devote to cooperative learning.
