Reading is an important approach to getting information and also a means for people tocommunicate with each other, so effective English reading plays an extremely important rolein people’s survival and development.However, in our country, except in class, there are few opportunities for students to readand speak English. So reading teaching is very important. Although teachers try their best toimprove students’ reading abilities, there aren’t significant achievements. All of these havebrought a lot of challenge to English teachers in senior high school.Since1970s, with the development of learning strategy research, more and more attentionhas been paid to the strategy training, but some doubt has been raised to the effectiveness of it.In addition, there have been relatively few studies to investigate the training effects onstudents’ reading ability in an ongoing Chinese EFL high school classroom context. Therefore,the empirical studies in this field are urgent and necessary.This present study intends to make up for the deficiency. The author uses theories relatedto reading strategies and strategy training and compares the effects of traditional teachingmethod and strategy training method on students’ reading proficiency to verify theeffectiveness of strategy training in senior high school.The research questions are listed below:1. Can Reading strategy training have great effects on students in their strategy use?2. Can the training of reading strategies improve senior one high school students’ readingcomprehension proficiency?The subjects are90students in senior grade one from the Middle School Attached toHebei Normal University. Among them,45students (class3)are the experimental group whoreceived explicit reading strategy training while the other45students (class4) belong to thecontrol group without any strategy training. The control group just participated in the readingcomprehension tests before and after the training. All the data were collected and analyzedand then the results are shown as follows:1. Reading strategy training can have great effects on students in their strategy use. Thefrequency of their strategy use has improved obviously, which proved the effectiveness of the training of the reading strategy.2. The training of reading strategies can improve senior one high school students’ readingcomprehension proficiency.
