In the late19th century, the Christian colleges came to China along with colonialism. Atthe beginning of20th century, the Christian colleges got a fast development, and exit fromChinese history after the founding of new China. The Christian colleges brought theadvanced educational philosophy to China, and the foundation of church missionarywomen school was the beginning of the women education in China. Objectively Christiancolleges developed a number of excellent talents for China, those ware advanced in manyrespects and had a positive effect on higher education in modern China. However,missionary open education with the thought of “Chinese for Christ” at first, and theChristian colleges had a strong aggression color. In the early Republic of China, thisaggressiveness was reflected in its internal management mechanism, recruiting object,setting religious disciplines etc. So the Christian college on the role of the modern Chineseeducation was limited, also played its role more objectively rather than subjectively.Compared with the western universities, Chinese modern universities found later,the origin of these universities was inevitable. Although they drew a lot from westernmodel, Chinese modern universities could be combined with China’s reality, and madecontributions to modern higher education. Research on these two types of university, hasan important significance for us to understanding the roles of these two types of universityin Chinese modern higher education objectively and accurately.This paper selects the early stage of the Republic of China (from1921to1927), and makesa research on Christian colleges and the National universities. This paper explores thesetwo types of universities by combining literature study and comparative study. The firstchapter is the introduction, mainly introduces the research purpose, the method andinnovation point. The second, third and fourth chapter make a comparative analysis of thecauses of the two types of universities, the education features and the implementation ofthe university function. Of cause, there are also some differences among differentuniversities, here we chose the ubiquitous, more prominent feature of these universities tomake analysis. The last chapter will make a summary and draw a conclusion of this paper.
