The rural area is the main base of New Curriculum Reform, and the concernsabout the current situation of new curriculum reform in rural areas, is the focus ofresearch on the New Curriculum Reform. As far as students are concerned, they aredirect beneficiaries, and their adaptability to the new curriculum reform is directlyrelated to the success of the curriculum reform. This research looks into the concernedsituation and discusses the adaptability of students from10schools of different cities,which includes Longsheng Autonomous County of Guilin in Guangxi ZhuangAutonomous Region, Fuchuan Yao Autonomous County in Guangxi ZhuangAutonomous Region, Gaozhou City in Guangdong Province, Fengkai County inGuangdong Province.In the research, the author investigates students’ adaptability for the NewCurriculum Reform by questionnaire, interview and classroom observation, and thencompares students’ adaptability by learning stages, districts, and ethnic and analyzesattained data. The research discloses that students in rural area do not adapt well to thenew curriculum. They are basically fond of the new curriculum, but they presentdifficulties in a smooth adaptation in the new textbooks, the new form of exercisesand altered learning approach. Comparing students in primary school, junior schooland high school, the high school students are the most adaptable to the newcurriculum. Although the students in primary schools and junior schools are fond ofthe New Curriculum and the new learning approach, the students in high school adaptbetter on textbooks, student roles and the new form of exercises. In different districts,the students in the country are the most adaptable to the New Curriculum, the studentsin town are less adaptable while the least students in the village are the least adaptable.In the different ethnics, students of Han nationality are more adaptable to the NewCurriculum than students of the minorities.The author analyzes the factors which can cause students’ inadaptability, whichbased on the above findings about students’ adaptability to the New Curriculum inrural area. These factors can be attributed to the following: a. the unreasonablecurriculum structure in rural school, b. the tendency of curriculum content beingurbanization, c. the lack of curriculum resources, d. the lagging of evaluation system,e. the limitation of teachers’ quality, f. students’ low self quality and poor awareness of the altered changing learning approach, h. the limitation of students’ background offamily culture.The author of this paper puts forward the following recommendations toimprove students’ adaptability to the New Curriculum: a. reforming the curriculumcontents, b. constructing evaluation system compatible with the Curriculum Reform; c.develop school-based courses with efficient utilization of local resources, d.improving teachers’ quality in rural area, e. cultivating students’ motivation inlearning. f. enhancing parents’ educational responsibility to their children in voluntaryinvolvements in the New Curriculum Reform.In addition, according to the characteristic of student’s adaptability to the NewCurriculum Reform in poor rural area and rural regions inhabited by ethic groups, thepaper also proposes specific countermeasures to improve student’s adaptability to theNew Curriculum Reform in the two different areas. The specific countermeasureswhich to improve student’s adaptability to the New Curriculum Reform in poor ruralarea are the following: a. increasing investment of education in rural area, b. makingthe course content be diversification with local cultural characteristics, c. to improveteachers’ quality in poor area by creating the mechanism for teachers which teachs ina rotation among different regions, d. develop the rural vocational education coursesin secondary school, e. change students’ education concept and transform theirlearning way to improve students ’ learning initiative. The other specificcountermeasures which to improve student’s adaptability to the New CurriculumReform in rural regions inhabited by ethic groups are the following: a, to developpre-school education in ethic minority areas, b. to launch the teacher who is minoritynationality training project, c. to provide courses of pluralism for training students’acceptance of national culture.
