The private colleges in Shanghai are undergoing a fast development. But due to certain historical and realistic factors, a considerable amount of problems exist as far as salary system is concerned, which mainly involve the following aspects-the salary is too low; the interests of the teachers lack security; the structure of the salary system is far from reasonable; the function of the incentive system is not distinct; salary growth mechanism is missing; long-term development motivation is insufficient. Based on the comprehensive study of salary systems of the private colleges home and abroad, the thesis analyzes the general principles of modern salary system, presents the factors that may affect salary system management and proposes the basic framework of modern salary system. After the extensive and in-depth survey of the salary system of all the private colleges in Shanghai, the author summarizes the main problems existing in the construction and management of the salary system of the private colleges in Shanghai, and raises the countermeasures and suggestions in four aspects, namely, building up reasonable salary level reference system, improving salary structure, straightening out salary relation, and establishing reasonable salary growth mechanism. The thesis may serve as a reference for both the private colleges and the departments concerned.
