Compared with JPEG algorithm, JPEG2000 standard algorithm shows a more professional performance on processing the image data, also JPEG2000 with low bit rate compression, ROI coding and progressive transmission have shown excellent properties, and it have important applications in many fields. However if JPEG2000 algorithm is implemented in software, the high complexity would restrict the overall image processing speed severely. As a result, this requires achieving the JPEG2000 according in terms of hardware, and improving the overall coding performance.According to the in-depth study of JPEG2000 standard image compression algorithm and digital watermarking technologies, the paper proposed the overall architecture of JPEG2000 image coding with watermarking for VLSI implementation, and the design which is embedded with watermarking information successfully is verified by the software. It ensures the safety of image. By analyzing of the sub-modules of the JPEG2000 algorithm processing and studying the theory of 9/7 Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), the paper improves the algorithm based on the lifting 9/7DWT and is for VLSI implementation. At the same time, the paper verifies the correctness of the module and gives the FPGA resource utilization. The optimized design can reduce the hardware resource in case of increasing the clock frequency, and enhance the overall balance of the circuit. The hardware resource and the processing time of EBCOT Tier1 algorithm is of 50% of the total JPEG2000 encoder. By the improvement of the EBCOT Tier1 algorithm and optimizing the total architecture, the VLSI circuit which is implemented with the improvement of the key part of bit plane coding (BPC) can greatly enlarge the computing time of the EBCOT Tier1 part and improve the overall throughout of JPEG2000 encoder.The design has the correct simulation results and achieves the security image with the watermarking. The test results show the optimization of the design and implementation in line with the image compression JPEG2000 standard.
