With the fast development of the mobile terminal platform and the continuous expanding application of GPS technology, the expansion of the GPS’s function in mobile phone operating system, has a lot of good features; it could be accessed openly, and hasones has become a focus in mobile application development. Android, a new smart ph greater extending ability both in software and hardware, therefore, the development of GPS system based on Android platform is of great value for practical application. The mobile map is a service with board market prospects and business value. It is convenient for people to access geographic information through mobile devices, allowing users to enjoy the same service as on the network. Mobile map service could make full use of GPS on the phone and network to position precisely, and get location information related to the position. It provides users a convenient and practical handheld map. Users can inquiry the city location; inquiry the road information, and so on through the mobile phone screen.Google’s Android platform supports the development of the positioning application by GPS and network, it provides appropriate and relevant maps. Google Maps API KEY provides great convenience on design and implementation of the mobile map service. It makes Google services and Android perfectly combined. The handset map service is based on the Android platform in this article, and the use of Google Android SDK, Eclipse, ADT and other development tools combined with Google influential network services, such as Web Map Google Maps to achieve mobile map applications. The application can be used to position the target location with latitude and longitude values, to achieve self-positioning by taking advantage of GPS technology provided by Google, to determine their current location by phone; furthermore, it can also be used to plan the navigation path by phone map, to check their routes between the origin and the destination. Besides, GPS track log could be recorded via the GPS of the cell phone, which means their travel routes could be stored and travel distance could be calculated through this function. In addition, the map can also zoom in and out. It meets the basic map service needs for the general mobile phone users.This paper describes the development background of mobile map based on Android platform, introduces the architecture of the Android platform, and then describes how to build the development environment of Android platform, make Google Maps API Key application, and prepare the development for mobile phones map preparation. Then this paper introduce related technologies about development of Android map, such as controls, layout, life cycle state of Android application, intent, Google Map API, etc. Finally, this paper presents the detailed design and implementation of the Android platform mobile map interface and each module function. Then the simulator to verify the map DDMS to simulate debugging the various functional modules is stated, and furthermore the design of this study are summarized, new ideas on enhancing functions and expanding mobile map is proposed.
