At present, international trade is still one of the three engines of Chinese economic growth. The development of Trade in Goods suffers bottleneck because of resource, environment, trade friction and other factors. Service trade, with the advantages of its high added value, low energy consumption, low pollution, will become the main driving force which transforms China from trade quantity into trade quality.The purpose of this paper is to study the service trade competitiveness of developed countries, to learn how to enhance the competiveness of service trade from the experience of developed countries so as to improve the competitiveness of Chinese service trade and to give objective guidance for enterprises and government.This paper summarizes the relevant studies on service trade competitiveness from different angles, at last proposes the research mentality, the method and the primary coverage of this paper.Then the author discusses the evaluations of competitiveness of service trade which includes three methods and two kinds of index. Based on the method of national comprehensive competitiveness evaluation from IMD and diamond theory from Potter, using scientific, pertinence, static analysis and dynamic analysis as principles, as well as relevant definitions, the service trade competitiveness evaluation system in this article is established.After describing the selected sample, based on the established evaluation system,7indexes are selected as the overall comparison index and3indexes are selected as the classification comparison index to compare the service trade competitiveness of21developed countries from2000-2008. A few groups of nations with similar resources are analyzed in particular. At last, characteristics of service trade competitiveness in developed countries are found out, which includes overall competitiveness and industry competitiveness.After studying the competitiveness of China’s service trade, three advantages and three disadvantages of Chinese service trade are discovered. Taking into consideration of the four initials from developed countries on how to enhance the service trade competitiveness, three strategies to promote the competitiveness of China are worked out:the service import should play its role well; choose strategic industries and nurturing the core competition strength; accelerate the development of domestic service industry.
