Research On The Influence Of High-speed Railway On The Passenger Traffic Pattern In Island Area

As a new mode of transport, the opening and operation of high-speed rail will have a major influence on passenger traffic pattern in China. On the one hand, high-speed rail enter the existing traffic pattern, can enhance the supply capacity of the whole transport system, and can greatly ease the tension situation of transport capacity which has long been in China, and can provide high-quality transportation services for passengers. On the other hand, high-speed rail bring competitive pressure to the existing passenger traffic modes, such as highway and civil aviation. Within a certain range, high-speed rail will compete with existing passenger traffic modes and will conducive to the optimal allocation of transport resources. It also conducive to the formation and perfection of the comprehensive transport system.In order to more clearly validate the influence on existing passenger traffic pattern when the high-speed rail enter a region, this paper will limit the scope of research in the island areas. By analysis the evolution mechanism which bases on two-factor: transport demand and technical support, this paper constructs a model by which high-speed rail optimizate the existing passenger traffic pattern. Though the studies of cases of Tokaido Shinkansen in Japan, China Taiwan high-speed rail and China Hainan high-speed rail, this paper validates the model.This paper argues that the operation of the high-speed rail have different effects on different transport market.(1)As entering the unsaturated transportation market, high-speed rail will develop with the various modes of transportation, and enhance the supply capacity of the whole transport system. If still can’t meet the transport needs, there will be new mode of transportation continue to enter when technical conditions are ripe.(2) As entering the saturated transport market, high-speed rail will intensify market competition. By finding their respective advantage scope of the market, the various modes of transportation will develop collaborative, or lead to certain modes of transportation out of the market. But we should see, regardless of the entry of high-speed rail is to strengthen the collaboration with the existing modes of transport, or intensified the competition between each other, both are beneficial to the optimization of the traffic pattern. This paper argues that facing the entry of high-speed rail, the existing patterns of passenger transport should recognize each other’s strengths and weaknesses correctly. In the market’s overlap areas, they should attract tourists by improving service quality and reduce costs, and avoid the vicious competition which could lead to waste of transport resources; In the market’s advantage areas, various modes of transportation should strengthen their convergence and cooperation, and play the overall effect of the integrated transport system.
