To realize prosperity, well-being, modernization and great rejuvenation of the Chinesenation has been a lofty ideal of generations. As a great feat in the course of Chinesemodernization and an important component of socialist road with Chinese characteristics, theurbanization path with Chinese characteristics plays a consequential role in promoting thedevelopment of economy and society.From1978to now, the rate of urbanization leaps from17.92percent to51.27percent; thepopulation of urban areas jumps from170million to over690million. These achievements haveattracted worldwide attention; however, some problems still exist and deserve to be concernedwith. To study the motivation, process, development stages, trends, problems and advancemechanism thoroughly, to throb with the pulse of the Chinese urbanization strongly, to make anobjective evaluation about the status quo of the Chinese urbanization, to make a foresightedprediction of the future, and to provide some useful experience for the government andadministrations have great value in theory and practical significance for overall planning thecoordinated development of urban, rural and regional areas, promoting the urbanization withChinese characteristics, achieving Chinese modernization and all-round construction of awell-off and harmonious society.This article systematically explains the definitions of urbanization and urbanization withChinese characteristics, and analyses the relationships between urbanization and Chinesemodernization. From the visual angle on the history of the Party, the process of urbanization withChinese characteristics since the Reform and Opening-up can be divided into four periods:Convalescence Period (1978-1984), Exploration Period (1984-1992), Breakthrough Period(1992-2002) and Critical period (1992-2002).This paper also makes a synthetically analysis onfour development modes of big cities, middle cities, small towns and equilibrium as well as theproblems involved with economical industrialization, urban community construction, layoutplanning of city building and spiritual civilization. Meantime, it proposes pertinent methods forthe future of Chinese urbanization and summarizes the principle to promote the urbanizationwith Chinese characteristics. At last, it sums up the experience simply about the development ofthe urbanization with Chinese characteristics from the Reform and Opening up.
