The purpose of this paper is to introduce the Balanced Scorecard into the area ofcompetitiveness evaluation of the commercial banks. By a model created on the basisof BSC, banks are compared on their performance. What is found in the analysis isthat the BSC model is suitable for the banks’ competitiveness evaluation. The paper uses the concepts of Balanced Scorecard proposed by Robert Kaplanand David Norton. It starts from the company’s strategy and evaluates theperformance through finance, customer, internal process and learning and growthperspectives. By doing an empirical research, this paper provides a single value bytaking into account all the essential objective and subjective factors. The study resultis compared with the ranking of The Banker, and the analysis is made. The value of this paper is that it tries to introduce the BSC into the banks’competitiveness evaluation. It broadens the field of BSC’s implication and also bringsnew idea to the bank’s performance analysis. With a single value, it is easier for thebank’s managers to control their bank and also it provides a way to compare theperformance with other banks. The limitation of the paper is that the subjective factors are less than the idealnumber. This has an influence to the weightage of the four perspectives. And theweightages of all the performance indicators would be more convincing if based onface to face interview or questionnaire.
