Due to the emphasis China has laid on soft power-national culture and theactiveness of small towns construction, the trend for small towns development are goingtoward differentiation, differentiated and diversified. On one hand, the greatest impulse forthe development of small town is industrialization on the whole; on the other hand, theimpact of industry on pulling the economic growth is on the wane, which makes smalltowns take initiative in finding a new pivot in the new round of development. The tourismindustry has reached its climax while the industrialization of small town slows down.Along with the improvement of market economy system and further alteration of divisionof function, small towns have their eyes on tourism, especially for those small towns withabundant natural tourism resources, realizing the positive impact of tourism on economy.However, there is great gap in small tourism-oriented towns’ development. Among those,ancient village of tourism-oriented small towns still have a long and harsh road to take dueto their weak industrial base, who are also hindered by policy, concept, funding andtechnology.The purpose of this article is to boost the development of ancient village oftourism-oriented small towns. Firstly, small towns in Zhejiang are studied in differentgroups, in an effort to find the characteristics and trend for small town development. Thenthis article takes3towns that share abundant resources but ended in dilemma as case study.The interior nature causing the dilemma is discussed through studying the location andradiation effect and exterior nature through analyzing the outside condition objectively.The break-through point for ancient village of tourism-oriented small towns can beacquired provided both interior and exterior conditions are considered thoroughly.Provided that ancient village of tourism-oriented small towns stick to tourism toboost economy, the goal for those towns’ development is suggested in this article bystudying typical cases like Cancun in Mexico, the thirteen-hong in Canton, NanxijiangRiver Valley in Zhejiang, Xidi and Hongcun in Anhui based on background analysis andexperience reference. Proper methods for development are also concluded here bystudying Zhuge Town, a typical tourism-oriented ancient village in Zhejiang. Specified sustainable development strategy, resource integration development strategy, ruralharmonious development strategy, as well as differentiated and characterized developmentstrategy are as well proposed in this article supported by sociology, economics and urbanand rural planology, which makes the development paths studied by this article morescientific and of greater guidance value.
