Effort estimation is a key activity in project management. Generally effortestimation is the first step to manage a project. The calculated result is the basicparameter to measure the project schedule, man resource and budget. Generally,effort is always evaluated as Man Month or Man Hour to measure the workingeffort in many companies. It is an important parameter to plan the schedule andresource in enterprise activities. The effort mentioned here is refered to softwaredevelopment effort.Till now many useful solutions are developed to estimate the effort needed inproject. The typical methods in China are project comparison and expert estimation.These methods estimate the project effort based on the earned experience fromprevious projects. In the leading countries of project management, these methodsare also used, but more parameters and constraints are involved in estimation andcalculation. In1960’s experts researching on the project management started to finda mathematics method to calculate the working effort in order to improve theestimation accuracy. It could change effort estimation from experience gamble toscientific solution. Some math models, for example COCOMO Ⅱ, were raised atthat time. These models are developed a lot since then. Estimating mathematical isthe developing trend in project management field and a bright future is predictable.To research the effort estimation methods based on math model, below workis done: Introduce several advanced effort estimation technologies by math models intoactual daily work. These technologies are used to estimate running project with. Itchecks if these technologies could resove the actual project estimation problems.Most math models are not developed for software in automotive industry.Some changes are made in COCOMO Ⅱ model to improve the performance whenCOCOMO Ⅱ is applied at automotive software. An evaluation system is created onthe base of estimation work of a plenty of projects by math model technology. Itcould be used to estimate future projects more conveniently and more accuracy.Fuzzy mathematics is used in this process to improve the evaluation accuracy.A new effort evaluation method is raised to accommodate the project changesduring software development, based on the actual characteristic of automotiveelectronic production.And, a comparision is made between the result of math model and actualproject statistic data, by this to evaluate the accuracy of math model method.
