As the infrastructure of country’s economic and national defense construction,highway is the prerequisite for socio-economic activity to become normally. It has avery important role in promoting social progress economic prosperity and improvingpeople’s material and cultural living standards as well as protecting the nationaldefense.Because the terrain is complex, the railway line is short, the air and watertransportation are underdeveloped in Qinghai province, the highway plays a dominantrole in the whole province’s integrated transport network and becomes the main modeof transportation. With the development of national economy,the association ofQinghai and the mainland has further strengthened in the cultural, the exchange ofgoods and the personnel exchanges. In this situation, the highway transport willcertainly be a big development, but also requires adapting to economic development.Firstly, this paper describes the background and significance of the research,makes a systematic review at home and abroad, but also treatises the basic theory onhighway traffic and regional economic. Meanwhile, it explores the relationship ofhighway transport and regional economic development, and further lays the theoreticalfoundation for this study.Secondly, this paper establishes the evaluation index system and researches thecomprehensive level of the highway transport and regional economic from2001to2010, and points out that the main factor to affect the highway transport developmentin Qinghai province, that is, the development scale of highway traffic. The highwaydevelopment level and potential are stress factor in highway development in Qinghaiprovince.Thirdly, the coordinate relationship of highway traffic and regional economic isstudied through the coordination, coordinated development degree, coordinateddevelopment trend and gray coordination. It points that the highway traffic and theregional economy have developed from the brink of coordination to a good in thestudy period in Qinghai province. However, the highway traffic has lagged far behindin the regional economic development. So far, it is in good coordinated road lagdevelopment. At the same time, the result of this research shows that the system of regional economic lacks of self-development capacity. The highway transport systemhas a positive role in promoting regional economic system. But it is no positive role inpromoting regional economic system on the highway transportation system because ofthe self-development capacity.Finally, the problems, solution and recommendations of highway transport andregional economic development are explored in accordance with the evaluation resultsabout the highway traffic and regional economic coordination.
