This paper conducts a comparative analysis of Shanghai port and Busan port in terms of port competitiveness. This study began with a question:"What would be the differences between Shanghai port remaining competitive by securing container output and Pusan port yielding its position to Chinese ports under intensifying competitions taking place around East Asia?" Accordingly, the main goal of this study is to figure out factors that have really affected port competitiveness of two ports and to draw realistic implications from the findings. This paper builds on the existing literatures and official data. Specifically, data between2003and2011were taken into consideration in order to understand chorological changes during development plans and changes of their rankings in container output. According to main findings that this paper has achieved, three most distinctive changes of Shanghai port are rapidly increasing container output, high possibility of port congestions and necessity of development for inland transportation. In contrast, Busan port has experienced constantly increasing numbers of container terminals, stagnancy of container output and improvement of port service and competitive port cost. Finally, it turns out that improving efficiency on port operation is strongly recommended for both ports at the moment.
