Path Choices Of Industrial Technical Progress

With the continuous improvement of opening-up and the degree ofinternationalization, the contradiction of fierce competition under economicglobalization and low level of technology is posing a severe challenge to China’seconomic growth, and put forward new demands on the way and the path choices ofChina’s industrial technological progress.About the problem of path choices of technological progress, The existingliterature whether normative or empirical studies do not reach the same conclusion.Specific to China’s situation, many scholars have studied the independent research anddevelopment, technological transformation, introduction of technology and purchase ofdomestic technology on the impact of technological progress,and indicate they all playan important role in industrial technology progress. However, in the current situation,there is no uniform understanding on choice of which path is more conducive to thetechnological progress of the industry, and the lack of relative empirical research, whichneeds further in-depth discussion. In addition, industry factors have a major impact inthe path selection, but existing researches have been more from the geographicalperspective, analysis combined with the characteristics of the industry is less. Aroundthe problem of path choices of technological progress, this paper put large andmedium-sized industrial enterprises as an object,and use sub-industry data to analysisimpact of the different paths on industrial technology progress, and make an in-depthstudy with the characteristics of the industry.Based on systematic summaries of existing literature,according to the source oftechnology acquisition, this paper summarizes the paths of China’s industrial technicalprogress from both endogenous and exogenous. And this study analysis’s the currentsituation of the industrial technical progress by using large and medium sized industrialenterprises data of36industries. Then the study inspects the effect of different paths onindustrial technical progress, and makes an in-depth discussion with characters of theindustry such as technology gap between domestic and foreign enterprises,technology-intensity, technology innovation-intensity and industry concentration. Itfinds that, independent research and development, technical transformation, andpurchase of domestic technology have a significant positive effect on industrialtechnical progress, introduction of technology plays a significant negative role; byinvestigating the interaction of the different paths, the study finds the introduction oftechnology has a crowding-out effect on independent R&D, but has a complementary effect on technical transformation. In addition, under the different characteristics of theindustry, the role of various paths on technical progress shows different characteristics.
