As a large-scale use of digital inkjet material, a lot of work has been donefor PP paper. PP synthetic paper shows chemical inertness without surfacetreatment, which could result in the stripping of absorbing ink l ayer. Therefor, modification to the surface of the PP synthetic paper is necessary. Comparedwith corona and plasma treatment etc, coating on the surface with polymers ismore effective. In varieties of polymers used for modifing, acrylic emulsion hasbeen applied more and more, because of the properties of environmentallyfriendly, easy to design, and good modification effect et al. However, thesynthesis of above-mentioned acrylic emulsion is still in the stage of laboratoryresearch in the domestic. For this reason, polymerization process meetingindustrial production and scale-up experiment were conduct based on past work.the polymerization process applied to industrial production was determinedby means of dynamic light scattering and other testing methods. The acrylicemulsion was synthesized in2L-reactors, and the size distributions of latexparticle was measured by means of DLS. The viscosity-average molecular weightof acrylate copolymer was measured by viscosimeter. Primer system wasprepared using the acrylic emulsion and HDI, then coating was conduct severaltimes in the workshop. Moreover, storable time and post curing time of theprimer was determined. At last, the curing mechanism of the primers system wasstudied by Infrared spectroscopy. The polymerization process applied to industrial production: pre-emulsification technology and seed emulsion polymerization were adoptedsimultaneously, reactant ratio1:3, polymerization temperature80℃, pre-polymerization time15mins, dropping time of pre-emulsion90mins, holdingtime3h, maturing time30mins and stirring speed90rpm. The averageparticle size of the acrylic emulsion synthesized in2L-reactor is302.5nm, andthe PDI is0.032. The viscosity-average molecular weight of acrylate copolymerwas5.8~12.8×10~4. Storable time of the primers was12h, and peel strength ofprimer could meet the using requirements after coating for9h. The curingreaction in primer system did occur.
