Currently gear CNC system is mostly achieved on the basis of the development of the universal CNC systems (such as the Siemens840D), the related technologies of gear cutting are added to CNC system. Compared with the universal gear CNC system, the automatic programming system for CNC hobbing in this paper is an important part of the special hobbing CNC system developed by the CIMS Institute of Hefei University of Technology.According to the characteristics that the shape and size of the gear could be determined by limited parameters, the feasibility of the automatic programming system for CNC hobbing has been analyzed and the related technologies of the automatic programming of gear cutting have been researched. On the basis of analyzing the gear hobbing processing, the mathematical model has been established, then the technology of automatically generating NC program has been obtained. After the workpiece, tool, process parameters have been entered through man-machine interface, NC program could be automatically generated in support of the automatic programming module and the data structures for interpolation and PID control could be generated in support of the compiled module.After the related technologies of the automatic programming system have been researched and the functional requirements have been analyzed, the architecture of the system has been put forward. In the hardware platform of ARM, DSP and FPGA, and based on the Windows CE operating system, using the VC++module in VS2005as a development tool, the automatic programming system for CNC hobbing has been developed, including the design of human-machine interface, automatic programming algorithm and other modules, such as automatic programming, location, setting, system, information, graphical simulation modules.After the system has been developed, each functional module must be tested, the test results show that the system basically meets the prospective design requirements, it could be achieved that NC program could be automatically generated through entering the workpiece, tool, process parameters and the motors could be run in accordance with the selected process cycle and the coordinates could be displayed in real-time.
