Study On The Effect Of Ethylene Butyl Acrylate Copolymer Toughed PC’s Composites

With the development of industry, more and more high-property plastics are needed.Polycarbonate, one of the five major engineering plastics, is widely used in electronicproducts, phones, lap tops and so on, thanks for PC’s high mechanical properties, high degreeof transparency and great hot resistance. But there are still many products which demandhigher requirements about the toughness and stiffness that the raw PC cannot achieve. Inaddition, PC/ABS and glass-fiber reinforce PC do not have very good notched impactstrength. So it’s very important to improve the toughness and stiffness of raw PC and PCcomposite materials.Firstly, after several tests had been done on different types of raw PC, PC2200was selectedas the toughening object for its excellent toughness and stiffness. And ethylene butyl acrylatecopolymer (EBA) had been used to tough the raw PC. Secondly, EBA had been used to toughPC/ABS composite, and the material PC/ABS/EBA composite was made which had highertoughness without decrease PC/ABS’s stiffness seriously. Thirdly, glass-fiber had been used toreinforce PC and the process of controlling glass-fiber at10%had been found. Then PC, EBA,glass-fiber were compounded together，and the material PC/EBA/GF10composite was madewith better toughness.The notched impact strength, tensile strength, elongation, flexural strength, flexuralmodulus, Morphology of the internal structure of the materials was tested by the instruments.And the thermal mechanical properties, relationship of thermal and weight loss and glasstransition temperature of PC/EBA composite were tested by DMA, TG and DSC.The main conclusions of the study:10%EBA can improve the toughness of high impact PCobviously. The notched impact strength reach81kJ/m~2instead72kJ/m~2of the raw PC, and theelongation is230%, which is much higher than75%of raw PC. At the same time, EBA solve theproblem of cracking of PC caused by internal stress;10%EBA bring the notched impact strengthof PC/ABS composite from31kJ/m~2to75kJ/m~2, the elongation rises to220%from90%. And5%of EBA bring up the notched impact strength of PC/GF10from6kJ/m~2to16kJ/m~2, the elongation rises to14%from9%.
