Study On Novolac Cyanate Ester Resin

Cyanate ester matrix resin is a kind of excellent matrix resin that can satisfy some increasingtechnical requirement. It has excellent dielectric property, which can not be matched by thehigh performance resins that have been successfully used, such as polyimide resin, phenolicresin and bismaleimide resin. In addition, cyanate ester resin has excellent heat-resistingproperty, mechanical property and adhesive property. The novolac cyanate ester resin has thebest heat resistance property in many kinds of cyanate ester resins. However, the long curingtime and high curing temperature of cyanate ester resin low its service stability. In anotherhand, the highly symmetrical triazine ring structure formed during curing leads to the highbrittle cured resin.these disadvantages severely hinder the applications and developments ofnovolac cyanate ester resin.The results show that DBA can catalyze the curing reaction and toughen the cured resinwith dual fuction, the5wt%DBA-catalyzed novolac cyanate ester resin exhibits the bestcatalytic effect and the impact strength of the cured resin modified by10wt%DBA is7.41kJ/m~2, the glass transition temperature and storage modulus of the cured resin modified byDBA both decrease slightly.In this paper, the effects on catalytic curing effect and properties of the cured resin of thebinary catalyst system including DBA and aluminum acetylacetonate (AlAt) were studied aswell. The results showed that the binary catalyst system has high-efficiency catalytic curingeffect on NCE and the cured resin has good heat resistance property and dielectric property.When the mass ratio was50:30(DBA: AlAt), the initial reaction temperature on DSC curvedecreased by111.8℃compared withnet NCE resin which means that modified resin can cureat medium temperature. The glass transition temperature of modified resin was the samecompared with net NCE with excellent heat resistance property, mechanical property anddielectric property.
