At present, with price advantage of uncoated color ink-jet printing papers, which still have vast number of consumers, and the demand is be rising. In order to get a good ink-jet printing, it is necessary to use the appropriate surface sizing agent to improve effects of ink-jet printing in the process of paper production. Among them, representatives of surface sizing agent have modified starch, styrene-maleic anhydride and styrene-acrylic polymer, which are the most widely used.In this paper, it mainly used different types of modified starch, SMA, and SAE Surface sizing agents of domestic and foreign production for studying the effects on physical properties (including brightness, opacity, porosity, smoothness and water resistance) and ink-jet printing performances (including color density, toner density, image clarity and color reproduction) of uncoated papers with the weight of sizing, and optimized surface sizing agents that could suit ink-jet printing. It also had coMPared different kinds of calendering conditions and humidity of base papers for finding the optimal sizing condition to provide a theoretical basis of actual production.The experimental results showed that the modified starch of cationic SP-1type was superior to the other two kinds of surface sizing agents of starch on improving performances of ink-jet printing when its sizing weight was about2.8g/m2.40℃,4MPa was the better calendering condition for improving the physical properties of papers and performances of ink-jet printing of papers. Humidity of30%RH of base papers could play the performances of sizing agent more fully. In SMA surface sizing agent, H520was conducive to improve the performances of printing papers when the sizing weight was2.0g/m2around, which was better than the other four kinds of SMA. At40℃,4MPa calendering condition, the physical properties of papers had been increased and the ink-jet printing performances of papers were better. When the humidity of base papers was40%RH, the performances of papers could be enhanced fully. Cationic SAE surface sizing agent could improve the performances of ink-jet printing papers when its sizing weight was about5.0g/m2, which was better than the anionic SAE.40℃,4MPa calendering condition was more conducive to improve the physical properties of papers and ink-jet printing performances. Humidity of40%RH of base papers could give full play to the advantages of sizing agents.
