As one of the most ideal material for electronic packaging in the field of aviationand space, high silicon aluminum (Si-Al) alloy will be tremendously used. High Si-Alalloy is very brittle. It is difficult for the traditional machining to achieve the complexstructures which are always needed in electronic packaging. Researching EDM for highSi-Al alloy has great significance for the application of high Si-Al alloy.Through analyzing the characteristics of ultrasound, the influences of ultrasonicvibration including the material erosion increment of single pulse, improvement ofEDM gap state, enhancement of the material throw-out, effects of the surface qualityand the electrode wear on the EDM for high Si-Al alloy are concluded.Through positive and negative comparison experiment, single factor experiment,orthogonal experiment and the measurement and analyze of the surface roughness, theeffects of the polarity effect and processing parameters on processing time, electrodewear and the surface roughness are researched, and the machining experience and lawsfor the high Si-Al alloy EDM are summarized. Through orthogonal experimentrespectively by EDM and ultrasonic-EDM, the similarities and differences of these twokinds of EDM are summarized.Finally, surfaces qualities respectively machined by EDM and ultrasonic-EDM onthe same conditions are researched and analyzed. Differences of the surface roughness,the surface elements, the surface morphology, the thickness of the surface degeneratinglayer, the surface abrasive resistance and friction coefficient and the surfacemicro-hardness are analyzed. In general, two kinds of EDM can improve the surfacemicro-hardness, the surface abrasive resistance and the surface sliding frictioncoefficient. Besides, the ultrasonic-EDM can improve these surface qualities moreobviously.EDM and ultrasonic-EDM have wonderful application prospects in the field ofhigh Si-Al alloy machining.
