Aiming at decreasing the effect of the wear of the cylindrical grinding wheel of thevertical plane grinder acting on the processing accuracy of the large flat,a new type ofautomatic wheel wear measurement device was developed. This apparatus was used for onlinemeasurement of the parallelism error of the processed workpiece surface, when to dressgrinding wheel and how to calculate the wear amount of the grinding wheel were based on theparallelism error. The grinding wheel dressing and loss compensation,compensating processing were realized by the CNC system.By this way,the grinding plane error was controlledwithin the allowable range. This apparatus was used in the occasion that the wheel wear wasthe major factor for grinding error.Firstly, the characteristics and process of the grinding wheel wear were analysed,themeasurement principle for getting the abrasion value of the cylindrical grinding was putforward based on the influence of the axial wear of the cylindrical grinding wheel acting onthe parallelism error of processed workpiece surface.Secondly, combined with the grinding process of the vertical plane grinder, the onlineautomatic measurement program for the amount of the grinding wheel wear was designed.According to the measurement program, overall design of the measurement unit was putforward,including mechanical structural overall design, control and measurement systemoverall design, software module functional design. And the detailed technical design ofmechanical structure and the hardware structure of the measurement&control system wereconducted.Thirdly, the calculation method of parallelism error and axial wear value of cylindricalgrinding wheel were put forward, and the measurement error of the measurement unit wasanalysed in detail.Lastly, combined the grinding process, the wheel dressing and loss compensationscheme were researched. The results of the analysis of the measurement error of the devicedemonstrate that the apparatus could be preferably to achieve accurate measurement of themachining plane parallel deviation, provide data for wheel wear compensation and machiningaccuracy, and has high application value for grinding precision and efficiency improvement.
