Jeans is well-loved by the majority of consumers with its rugged, comfortable, abrasion resistant characteristics and so on. Cotton is the main force in jeans, but in recentyears, China’s cotton security issues become increasingly prominent. Kapok fiber as a newmaterial emerged. Denim fabric made of kapok fiber has applied to the market, yet kapokhas been only made up of weft in denim fabric. To improve the content of kapok denimfabric, the first problem is to solve kapok of indigo dyeing. A lack of affinity betweenindigo dye and kapok fiber, there exists low dye uptake, dyeing impervious, uneven dyeingand other issues. The mechanism of indigo-dyed kapok fiber was studied in this paper at first. Studiedfactors affecting indigo dyeing by univariate analysis to find the best concentration ofNaOH, the Na2S2O4concentration, dyeing time and dyeing temperature of fiber dyeing. Then drew the conclusion of the best kapok fiber dyeing process by orthogonal analysis. The optimum dyeing process was as follows: hydrosulfite3.5g/l, sodium hydroxide7g/l,dyeing temperature30℃, dyeing time5min.The modified kapok fiber after alkalitreatment has little effect on the performance of indigo dyeing.By scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X diffraction(XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis(TG), observed the microstructure of kapok fibersafter alkali treatment and analysis the rate of moisture absorption change. Using the bestindigo dyeing process dyes kapok fibers, then measured the uptake rate and K/S values ofthe treated kapok fiber. Thermal stability of the treated kapok fiber reduced. After kapokfibers being treated by high concentration of alkali, kapok fiber became shrinkage and flat;moisture absorption of the treated kapok fiber reduced and indigo dyeing performance didnot improve.Using cellulase and laccase pre-process kapok fiber, indigo dyed the treated kapokfiber. By the means of changing the concentrations of the two different enzymes, treatmenttime, treatment temperature and type of different pH values observed the changes ofmicrostructure and morphology of the treated kapok fibers. The modified kapok fiber dyedusing the optimum dyeing process. The dyed kapok fiber was characterized by K/S values. After laccase and cellulose treating the kapok fiber, the microstructure of the fiber changed less, the crystallinity changing substantially, the thermal degradation temperature reducedabout10℃. Moisture absorption rate of both laccase treatment and cellulase treatmentincreased. K/S values of the untreated kapok fiber indigo dyeing was about4.5, while K/S values of the enzyme treatment kapok fiber was above6, so the dyeing properties of thetreated kapok fiber with cellulase and laccase is increased.
