In recent years, superabsorbent materials develops quickly on the health care and surgery. The surface of the natural and artificial fiber has been treated to improve the absorption, which is the hotspot in the field of high-performance medical dressings. Cellulosic textiles treated by the carboxymethylation can make the surface of the fiber form the network structure of hydrophilic carboxyl methyl groups and the core of the fiber maintain the original structure. And the carboxymethyl-cellulose is treated by the crosslinking, so the superabsorbent and high-strength material has been fabricated. The cellulose-based medical dressings is the outstanding one.In the paper, the medical dressings made by the natural cellulosic fabrics has been chosen as the raw material. Both the carboxymethylation and crosslinking after carboxymethylating was finished by the different processes. First, the carboxymethylation was finished by the water-borne method, and the single factor analytical method has been used to analyze the effect of the concentration of the sodium hydroxide, the molar ratio of the sodium hydroxide and chloroacetic acid, and the mass ratio of the chloroacetic acid and the cotton gauze on the structure, absorption, and the strength of the treated medical cotton gauze. At last, the best conditions of the carboxymethylation have been found. It’s shown that, when the concentration of the sodium hydroxide is20%, the molar ratio of the sodium hydroxide and chloroacetic acid is2.7:1,the mass ratio of the chloroacetic acid and the cotton gauze is1.5:1, the degree of substitution is0.21, the water absorption is370.5%, the salt absorption is292.3%, the breaking force is181.83N, and the breaking strain is31.3%.Besides, in order to improve the breaking force of the cotton gauze, the carboxymethylation under the best condition as previously mentioned and the organic crosslinking modification of the epichlorohydrin was combined. And the single factor analytical method has been used to analyze the effect of the amount of the crosslinking agent, crosslinking temperature, and crosslinking time on the structure, absorption, and the strength of the treated medical cotton gauze. At last, the best conditions of the crosslinking have been found. It’s shown that, when the amount of the crosslinking agent is10%, the crosslinking temperature is65℃, and the crosslinking time was120min, the water absorption is401.8%, the salt absorption is375.9%, the breaking force is212. IN, and the breaking strain is30.5%.At last, the cotton gauze after the carboxymethylating under the best condition as previously mentioned, was treated by the inorganic crosslinking of the calcium chloride. And the single factor analytical method has been used to analyze the effect of the amount of the crosslinking agent, crosslinking temperature, and crosslinking time on the structure, absorption, and the strength of the treated medical cotton gauze. At last, the best conditions of the crosslinking have been found. It’s shown that, when the amount of the crosslinking agent is5%, the crosslinking temperature is40℃, and the crosslinking time was60min, the water absorption is434.5%, the salt absorption is351.1%, the breaking force is211.1N, and the breaking strain is33.8%.Compared with the no carboxymethylating cotton gauze, the water absorption, the salt absorption, and the breaking force of the carboxymethylating cotton gauze have increased by42.8%,32.2%, and85.5%; Compared with the carboxymethylating cotton gauze, the water absorption, the salt absorption, and the breaking force of the carboxymethylating and the organic crosslinking cotton gauze have increased by8.4%,28.6%, and16.7%; the water absorption, the salt absorption, and the breaking force of the carboxymethylating and the inorganic crosslinking cotton gauze have increased by17.3%,20.1%,16.1%, which open a good prospects for the medical dressing material.Based on the medical cotton gauze, a series different performance of carboxymethylating and carboxymethylating-crosslinking medical gauzes has been fabricated, which can expand the application of the medical dressings and provide the experimental and theoretical basis for the developing on the high-performance medical dressings used in the wound treatment.
