Machine tool is the key equipment of manufacturing industry, with the development of times and technologies, higher requirements for machine tools are needed:high-precision, high-accuracy and high-efficiency. Traditional cast iron machine tool bed can not meet the developing performance requirements of high precision machine tool. Besides, with the lack of mineral resources and the improvements of people’s awareness of environmental protection, there are urgent needs for new environment-friendly materials to substitute the traditional cast iron.Extensive exploration and a large number of achievements had been achieved by predecessors.Portland cement concrete has the advantage of easy shaping.high damping,good thermal properties and low cost.But after a period of using,the defect of fissility and corrosive make it vulnerable to the erosion of cutting fluid and the iMPact of workpieces.which makes it could not be widely used.Epoxy resin concrete has not only the advantages of high damping,high specific stiffness.low thermal conductivity and small thermal deformation,but also the advantages of erosion resistance,crack resistance and easy shaping etc.But,the cost of it is much higher than cast iron,which makes it applied only to some expensive high precision machining centers,could not be widely used. Composite concrete which consists of silicate reinforced cement concrete inner core and polymer concrete external coating layer emerged as required, it not only combines the two concrete’s advantages, but also has very high cost performance, The calculated result shows that its manufacturing cost is only two thirds of cast iron bed and one third of epoxy resin concrete bed, which makes it worthy popularization.In this paper, a horizontal machining center was chosen to be the study prototype, on the basis of analysis of the prototype bed, combined with relevant design criteria and design experience, composite concrete machine tool bed was designed.In the process of composite concrete machine tool bed designing.not only the static and dynamic character was concerned,but also the technique-economics and manufacturability.which to ensure that the new machine tool bed is feasible and worthy popularization.The main content of this paper is as follows.(1) The manufacturing process design of Portland cement concrete, epoxy resin concrete and composite concrete was accomplished.Includes relevant mechanics performance testing and damping testing.(2) The interfacial mechanism of composite concrete and influence of the interfacial structure and manufacturing process to its performance was studied,includes mechanism performance.thermal performance etc. (3) According to the prototype bed’s actural work situation, the mechanical model was built, and based on Pro/ENGINEER、Hyper Mesh、ANSYS software, geometry and FEM model modeling of prototype and composite concrete bed were finished, as well as relevant static and dynamic simulation.(4) On basis of the analysis result of prototype machine tool bed, combined with the relevant design criteria and experience, by the method of design-analyze-redesign, the design of composite machine tool bed was done, as well as the static and dynamic analysis.(5) The small scale composite concrete machine tool bed’s wood mould was design and manufactured, as well as the small scale composite concrete machine tool bed model according to the proportion of1:5.And Based on small scale composite concrete machine tool bed model, the dynamic test was done and the main modal parameters which will be coMPare to the simulation result.The conclusion showed as below.(1) Composite concrete, as a kind of machine tool bad manufacturing material, meets the needs of high precision, high speed and high efficiency fully, especially the high damping ratio character, enhances the bed’s vibration resistance a lot, plus its low thermal conductivity and coefficient of linear expansion with very good cost performance, all of which make it perfect machine tool bed manufacturing material.(2) Composite concrete machine tool bed has advantages over traditional cast iron bed both in dynamic and static properties,and composite concrete has a wealth of sources and good cost performance,plus the environmental friendly features, which gave it universal application significance.
