With the rapid development of global manufacturing, the application industry of welding technology has become increasingly widespread. But, because of limitations of science and technology and working conditions, fewer and fewer people engage in welding work. According to this, this paper presents a design of five degrees of freedom gantry automatic welding machine on the basis of consulting references and analysis of actual welding production processFirst, the overall mechanical structure of the gantry welding machine is designed, and the virtual prototype modeling of the Welding machine is created through3D software Solidworks. Second, through the Finite element analysis of the welding machine gantry beams, and combining with the optimization function of Simulation and the actual production requirements, the weight and the structure of the gantry beams have been optimized. The Modal of the overall welding machine is analyzed, and system modal parameters are obtained. It provides a strong theoretical basis for the analysis and optimization of the vibration parameters of the welding machine’s mechanical structure. Then, a three-dimensional space coordinate system of the welding machine prototype is established and the mutual positional relationship between the welding machine lever members is determined. Finally, the position matrix of the torch in the whole coordinate system is obtained by calculating the joint angle values, the solid model of the welding machine is built and the PLC control program of basic welding operation is written. Through the debugging emulator control of the model, the smooth movement of the welding is achieved and the design requirements are met.
