Superabrasive grinding wheels are widely used because of their excellentgrinding performances. Meanwhile, due to their charactersitcs such as ultrahighhardness and wear resistance, the truing and dressing of superabrasive grindingwheels also become very difficult. Truing of superabrasive grinding wheel s withtraditional methods is insufficient because of low efficiency and la rge tool wear.Therefore, this paper conducts a superabrasive grinding wheel laser truing research.Firstly, this paper studies the characterisitcs of laser and its material processingmechanism, and the principles of laser truing of superabrasive grinding wheels. Bycomparing two laser truing schemes, the one named real-time control laser truingscheme, that is laser truing while measruing, is adopted due to its feasibility, truingprecision and truing efficiency. Then a laser truing system is designed based on theselected scheme. According to the requirements of wheel truing process, the laserirradation direction is radial.Secondly, by studying the forming of superabrasive grinding wheel topographyand its characteristics, and the wheel topography mea surement methods, a grindingwheel topography measuring system is designed based on the laser tri angulation. Themeasuring system can achieve the fast and precise measurement of wheel profile.Verified by experiments, the static and repeated measurements e rror of the wheeltopography measuring system is less than7um. And the accuracy of the measurementof wheel profile by using the measuring system is influenced by the sensor sinstallation accuracy.Thirdly, the study of the paper focuses on the real-time requirements of theprocess of laser ablation of superabrasive grains on the wheel surface. Following thestudy work, by analysing the real-time characteristics of laser emitting control processof the laser truing system, a formula for calculating the s ystem s response time isintroduced and the response time of the system is about232us. To meet therequirement of the laser truing system, the control module of the system is designedbased on DSP TMS320F28335. Test results show that the response time of the controlmodule is about2us.Finally, an electroplated diamond grinding wheel laser truing experiment basedon the designed laser truing system is conducted, and the experimental results lead to the following conclusions: the system can successfully realize the selective removalof the protruding grains on grinding wheel surface and the preparing of grindingwheel profile with satisfying results. Based on the above success, it can be argued thatthe system can shaping the entire wheel surface as well. Therefore, the designed lasertruing system has practial value. It can also be found that the sizes of abrasive grainswhich the truing system can effectively remove are determined by the system sresponse time,when the wheel granularity and wheel tangential velocity are fixed.This conclusion proves that the real-time requirements analysis of the process of laserremoval protruding grains on wheel suface is correct.
