The Study And Innovative Application Of Ruyi Pattern In Modern Han Folk Costume

With the integration and development of thousand years, the shape and process of theChinese traditional Han costume reached to the top in the early20thcentury. However, withthe social turmoil and revolution, Han costume declined rapidly to a situation which was indanger of extinction in the latter half of the20thcentury. The decorative patterns on thetraditional costume were also faced to extinction with the passing of the wearers andproducers of old generations. Ruyi pattern, served as an important member of decorativepatterns, was favored by people with its good moral of lucky and fortunate. With itschangeable style, strong adaption in costume and outstanding moral, Ruyi pattern had becomeone of the most common patterns on the costume that time．The origin of Ruyi pattern can be traced back to the cloud thunder pattern and curlyheart-shaped plant pattern during the Chunqiu period. Then it obtained initial development inthe Qin and Han Dynasties and continued to develop by the frequent cultural exchanges fromWei to Tang Dynasty. In the period of Song and Yuan Dynasties, the structure of the Ruyipattern gradually stabilized with the domination of minorities. When the Ming and Qingdynasties came, different social classes chose Ruyi pattern as one of their favorite patterns．The pyramid-like structure of the Ruyi pattern provided a strong sense of stability andstructure. It was widely distributed in all the parts of folk costumes, ranged from the coatcollar, skirt and panties to skirts and trousers, as well as the accessories(such as headornaments, bags, shoes and hats). It could not only fill in the void on the garment, improve thedecorative capacity, but also strengthen the soundness and increase the thickness of thecostume, indicating that Ruyi pattern was a perfect combination of decoration and usability．As a production of the integration of the exotic pattern and Chinese pattern, Ruyi patternhad a beautiful shape and auspicious meaning. In the fields of decorative arts, Ruyi patternshad both abstract and representational decorative artistic styles, which represented the beautyof style including variation and integration, rhythm and cadence, as well as the beauty oftechnology including embroidery, embroidery and hollow out. The abundant cultural moral ofRuyi not only contained the symbol of our nationality such as harmony and modest, butalso included the Chinese culture and religious belief including cycle and immortalization．After an in-depth study on Ruyi pattern, this paper investigated the application of Ruyipattern in modern clothing and consumer acceptance by questionnaires both online and inperson. The effective questionnaires were taken back and analyzed, then the statistics ofconsumer purchasing intentions were analyzed. At the last part of this paper, a series ofinnovative application of Ruyi pattern on modern garment were investigated, hoping toprovide some inspiration and significance to the modern garment industry and social fashion.
