As we all know, the number of short fiber is an important indicator of raw cotton quality. Short fiber contained in the raw cotton has great harm to textile industry. Not only does the cotton consumption of cotton mills increase, but also the yarn strength and appearance level decreases, and available spinning count reduces. Thereby it will lead to great influence to natural fibers such as cotton and kapok production, spinning technology, product quality and trade links.The most commonly used characterization parameter of short fiber number is the weight percentage of short fiber, which is abbreviated to short fiber content (SFC). Accurate measurement and characterization of the rate of short-staple can not only provide guidance to the cotton breeders to make high quality cotton, but also can let the textile manufacturers optimize process and improve the quality of products.So it is crucial to find out the method of accurate measurement of short fiber information of these natural fiber. Now available instruments to test the rate of short-staple have certain disadvantages, such as time-consuming, complicated operation, inaccurate results, expensive price of the instrument.So the topic of my research is to design a rapid, accurate and low cost method to measure the rate of short-staple.This thesis is mainly to supplement and improve the research of the existing double image fiber length test systems, launching the research from the following three parts:the first part is exploration and test of the rate of short-staple formula based on double image testing techniques and methods of multivariate statistical analysis; The second part is the test of accuracy of current functions of the double image fiber length test systems; The third part is to test and analysis the length and fineness of three kinds of kapok fibers by means of single fiber artificial measuring method and micro projection method, respectively.The first part is to collect23batch of fiber samples with different length and content of short-staple(including14species of cotton fiber sample,8species of kapok fiber sample,1specie of chemical fiber sample), using AFIS and single fiber artificial measuring method to measure the length distribution and the short fiber content of each batch of sample. Using multivariate linear regression analysis method, extract the13sets of physical indicators which most relevant to the short fiber content from fiber plexus curve of double image method and input to SPSS software, and receiving the short fiber content empirical formula using13sets of physical indicators based on23kinds of fiber samples. Then using another6kinds of samples(including4cotton samples,2kapok samples), a tester respectively test the rate of short-staple using this empirical formula and basic mature methods and to examine the accuracy of the rate of short-staple empirical formula by analyzing the differences of the results of two methods.Empirical results show that for the fiber samples with short fiber content within30%, the accuracy of the empirical formula is very high, but, it can not be guaranteed for those samples with short fiber content more than40%.The second part is to validate the accuracy and repeatability of the double image fiber length measuring system using6kinds of samples used in the first part. Results show that the consistency of double image method and the current mature method is very good, but for certain whole small or big of system,a further verification and correction in the future is necessary.Then collecting another8cotton samples, two testers use this method respectively, get the length indexes and analyze and compare difference of results to check the repeatability of the double image fiber length test method.It turns out to be that for double side cluster sample preparation.the operator’s manual technical requirement is high.The third part is to analyze and compare the structure performance and application value of another three kinds of kapok fiber samples, using single fiber artificial measurement method to measure fiber length and micro projection method to measure fiber fineness, and then to receive some conclusions through the comparative analysis, making a certain role to the research of kapok fiber length and fineness.lt can also promote the use of kapok fiber, ease the present situation of the cotton fiber and other natural fiber resources shortage, etc.
