With the rapid development of metal cutting technology, the indexable coating inserts which have high hardness, high wear resistance and good chemical stability are widely used in the actual production, greatly improving the efficiency and quality of the metal cutting. However, the wear of the tool is still the key factors that affect the production efficiency further improvedThis paper bases on the theory study of the tool wear and the systematic analysis of the main factors which affecting the tool durability, using four kinds of coating inserts for cutting test of two kinds of workpiece material:cannon steel and stainless steel. Aspects from the morphology of the inserts’wear, life curve and chip morphology, and through the use of SEM and EDS, focusing on analysis of the coating on the tool life. The test results show that on the semi-finishing conditions when cutting difficult materials, TiAIN coated with PVD coating process showed the best thermal stability and high temperature antioxidant properties, has a high durability of the tool, while the other three inserts because of the different structure of the coating composition and coating progress, their wear-resistant performance is relatively poor.The result of the study has a guiding significance for the selection of tool in the practical production, and provides a reference for the optimal design of indexable coating inserts.
