Hydroxylethyl methacrylate (HEMA) contains a lively C=C bond and-OH groups which is prone to the reactions such as condensation, dehydration, dehydrogenation. So it can be synthesized for Acrylic resin which is widely used in the field such as coatings, adhesives and fiber processing.Combined with the company’s existing equipment, HEMA is synthesized from methylacrylic acid (MAA) and ethylene oxide (EO). The production process is designed and several catalysts are sifted respectively for synthesis of HEMA. The results show that HEMA is synthesized by a certain amount of MAA and EO in the presence of chromium acetate. In the optimization process, the HEMA product content will be more than94.0%; Then a highly pure product which content is more than99.5%and color of APHA is less than10will be geted through distillation column containing4theoretical plates.At present, the process is applied to the production facility of Shanghai Huayi Acrylic Acid Co. Ltd., achieving a good results.
