UV curing is a photochemical process, which makes the ink, paint, adhesives wildly usedin industry instant curing by irradiating them with ultraviolet. Compared with the traditionalheating curing technology, UV curing has many advantages such as improving produce speed, reducing the reject number, enhancing abrasion resistance and solvent resistance. Therefore, electronic ballast for UV lamps has become hot spot of study. And, electronic ballast willgradually replace the traditional transformer ballast because of its high efficiency, goodperformance, and small volume.First, the UV lamp’s lighting mechanism and voltage-ampere characteristics areintroduced in detail. And this paper analyzed the UV lamp’s staring up process of four stagesbreakdown, glow discharge, glow to arc discharge, arc charge. And, electronic ballast’sfunction, advantages and disadvantages are described.Secondly, frequently-used electronic ballast’s topology is discussed. And, combined withthe practical need of this project, we chose the lean topology for this project. This topologynot only ensures the efficiency but also reduces the complexity of the system. Then, wedesigned a stratagem for UV lamp’s starting up, which separates the process into three stages, they are starting, preheating, and constant power working, to control.Thirdly, the main circuit of electronic ballast and control system’s hardware areconcretely designed. And, we establish a simulation model based on Francis’s hypothesis.Meanwhile, this model is realized in MATLAB, the simulation results showed this modelcould accurately describe the UV lamp’s characteristics. Additionally, the main circuit issimulated in Simulink to confirm its feasibility. And, the software design flow is presented. At last, a prototype of5kW electronic ballast for UV lamp is manufactured, based onprevious discussions. And, this prototype confirms this electronic ballast’s feasibility.
