With the social and economic development, the demand for electricity is growing year byyear, the power grid have been expanding. Energy resources distribution is extremely unevenin China, Rich water resources in the western region, but the lack of electricity demand, andeconomically developed eastern region, however, lack of energy. Therefore, it’s necessary tosend the power from west to east. HVDC systems have evidence advantage in long distancebulk power transmission. So it has played an important role in the application of China’spower transmission from the West to the East. A complex network with multi-infeed HVDChas formed, such as Southern Power Grid and East China Power Grid, study on this type ofgird is necessary. The research methods of multi-infeed HVDC system include quantitative method, electromechanical transient simulation method and electromagnetic transient simulationmethod. The quantitative analysis is a relatively macro structural indicator, but difficult todescribe the dynamic behavior;electromechanical transient simulation only consider thefundamental; HVDC system can be detailed simulated in electromechanical transientsimulation, more over, the nonlinear characteristics of component and asymmetric fault canbe considered,so electromechanical transient simulation method is more accurate on studymulti-infeed HVDC system.Electromechanical transient models of main component in multi-infeed HVDC systemare discussed, based on the summer-peak load operation mode of Southern Power Grid in2011,established the detailed model which include all500kV substation and5HVDCtransmission systems, the user-defined modeling methods and steps are described, modelingand debugging by region is taken.By comparing the BPA and EMTDC simulation result, as well as PMU and EMTDC, theelectromagnetic transient simulation model be verified. Finally, the paper analysis the dynamic characteristics of2011Southern Power Gridsummer-peak load operation mode on aspects of commutation failure, transient stability andDC power restore.
