In recent years, with the rapid development of economy, the urbanization processof China is further accelerated. In the process of urbanization in the southwestmountainous area, the urban-rural dual structure has become increasingly prominent inthe urban system, the economic ties and gradient diffusion between the “giant city” and“giant rural” are weakened. Therefore, the development of the existing small towns, which have a good economic, industry and population foundation, is helpful to enhancethe city network between urban and rural areas, and it is the inevitable choice of thesouthwest region towards further prosperity and major strategic task.Because of the western development strategy and the establishment of nationalcomprehensive reform experimental area on urban and rural harmonious development,in the southwest, the metropolitan area with the core of Chengdu and Chongqing isbeing created, the construction of the mountainous towns in southwest has madesignificant progress, but also faces more severe challenges. With the speed up of theurbanization process, and up to50%of the major turning point, urban construction andeconomic development model will have a significant change, and also leads to someproblems, such as the city ecological crisis, the tense relationship between people andland, the irrational use of land resources, the old urban space cannot meet the needs ofmodern working life, and the fracture of urban context. Therefore, with the developmentof the new towns around the cities, the renewal of the old towns has become one of themost urgent problems in Chengdu-Chongqing metropolitan area. There are many familiar backgrounds such as development course, metropolitanbackground, environment, etc, in Yilan Taiwan, with the mountainous towns inChengdu-Chongqing metropolitan area. And there are many similar problems in Yilan,Taiwan, in the early1980s. In nearly30years, Yilan has made a lot of practicalexperience to the world’s attention, which could be a reference to the mountainoustowns in Chengdu-Chongqing metropolitan area.Based on the summary of the study in metropolitan area, small towns, urbanrenewal and mountainous town, drawing on the eco-city theory and the theory ofcompact cities, and combining the related experience of Yilan, this paper combines thestudy in urban spatial morphology control with the research in urban economicrestructuring, urban ecological security, the revival of urban culture, and overall urban-rural development, to form the related theory and control mechanism ofmountainous towns of Chengdu-Chongqing metropolitan area, and enhance the controlmechanism of adaptive and maneuverable. This paper falls into six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, elaborated the research background of thisthesis, establish the meaning and purpose of the study, defines and explains the researchscope and concepts, and summarizes the relevant research at home and abroad, toorganize the study method and frame, and lays the foundation for the study. The second chapter is to put forward and analyze problems, analyzes thedevelopment, present situation and problems in Chengdu-Chongqing metropolitan areaand Yilan, summed up the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in theprocess of development, and analyzes the similarities and differences between the twoplaces. The third chapter is the study of the urban renewal of Yilan based on two fieldresearch, analyses the renewal strategy of the landscape, the city center, and thewaterfront, and summarizes the available reference design strategy. The fourth chapter, through to the reference experience of Yilan, and combinedwith the particularity in mountainous town in Chengdu-Chongqing metropolitan area, put forward operational strategies and methods from the relationship with metropolitanarea, ecological security, compact development, and context continuity. The fifth chapter is the applied research part of the paper, part of the renewalstrategy proposed in the last chapter, is applied to the street renewal practice of QijiangDistrict., and through practice process and field research to reflect the design andmanagement mechanisms. The sixth chapter is the conclusion, summarize the main conclusions of thisdissertation and the remaining problems, and make a prospect to future research.
