“Rooftop gardens” are becoming a trend as a green and recreation mode in recent years,focusing on rooftop greening and integrating food production. In Europe, Japan, and NorthAmerica, people who have gone crazy for this emerging hobby open up small farms in rooftopsto plant melons, fruits, and vegetables, enjoying an idyllic life in the world built of reinforcedconcrete. gains popularity among many city dwellers, but it is still feeling its way forward inChina. This paper studies the design, application, and operation and management modes ofrooftop gardens in modern city development, presents a way to developing rooftop gardens intocharacteristic fifth urban surfaces, and researches solutions to increasing green space andimproving the eco-environment. This paper also aims to help people return to an idyllic life andprovide positive guide to the sustainable development of modern cities.This paper analyzes the importance of rooftop gardens to urban development, studies theirbenefits and drawbacks, probes into their operation and management patterns, and finallysummarizes their specific design and application modes. The paper’s research is rooted inconsultation of extensive documentation, integration of successful cases and achievements inEurope, North America, and China, creative absorption of previous research achievements, aswell as combination of theories in landscape ecology, landscape aesthetics, urban ecologicalplanning, and sustainable development. By linking theory with practice, the paper presents asystematic analysis of real domestic and foreign cases by building types, which paves the way formore practical application and development of rooftop gardens.
