With the expanding scale and the deepening reform of distribution network, the existing computing software’s workload of distribution network is increasing. The applications of GIS technology in power system has important academic and practical significance to improve the automation and reliability of distribution network. In this paper, we proposed the GIS-based distribution network fault location system based on the study of the status distribution automation. Through the analysis and research of distribution network topology analysis and fault location theory, and we implement the individual functional modules of distribution network GIS system ultimately.First, this paper analyzes the characteristics of distribution network and GIS network. Based on the complex structure of distribution network, we proposed network model and data structures of distribution GIS system based on the geometric network. Geometric network makes the operation of network topology in the GIS background much simply. This model resolved the problem, GIS network topology can not analysis of complex network, and gave the foundation of GIS system for the distribution network fault location function’s realization.Second, this paper studied the methods of current small grounding fault location, and compared the advantages and disadvantages of these methods. On this basic,we proposed the small current grounding location method based on the sub-principle, and elaborated the design and implementation process of this algorithm. The algorithm deal with failure information effectively.Using of zero-sequence voltage,zero-sequence current, phase and amplitude, we calculated the line section occurred small current grounding fault of the distribution network, and achieved the fault display in graphical interface with GIS technology.Then, on the GIS-based distribution network topology, we proposed fault location algorithm,and this method reduced the amount of data calculation and fault location time greatly. Geographic Network has closed-loop structure or grid structure.In normal operation,the supply power their electrical equipment radially. This method can simplify complex power distribution network fault location,and only considered the fault tree involved, improved the search speed and efficiency of fault location system.Finally, based on the study previous four chapters theory, this paper developed a GIS platform distribution, and achieved network topology analysis and fault location functions.
