A city’s spatial morphology evoles as the city developes.It reflects comprehensively the city’s social, economical and cultural situation in different historical periods. It is also the result of the interaction between the natural environment and human activities. Last a few years has witnessed an great boost of economy and urbanization in China. As the secondary central city in Anhui Province, Wuhu, especially its central area, is seeing significant change in urbanization. Therefore, there is increasing demand of space in the central Wuhu city, and big chanllenge for an orderly evolution of urban space. But at the same time opportunities will be generated.This paper makes a historical research on Wuhu city’s spatial morphology evolution since its beginning. It focuses on the feature, law, and driving force of city’s spatial morphology evolution in its central area, analyzes the relation between the city’s spatial morphology evolution and the natural environment, economic development, and social change, and, taking into consideration if the real situation, makes a preliminary speculation on its spatial morphology evolution,.This paper consists of:First, the background, the purpose, the significance, methodology and the outline and the scope of the research. Second, several important concepts related and review on the related theories from both at home and abroad. Third, the history and driving force of city’s spatial morphology evolution, which would be divided into four stages, namely, ancient satge, modern and contemporary stage, the stage after the founding of the reform and the stage after opening up. This part also concludes the feature, law, and driving force of city’s spatial morphology evolution at each stage, in terms of geography, economy, transportation, municipal planning and consumption demand. Fourth, the description and qualitative analysis of the downtown construction, and the quantitative analysis of the compaction level and space expansion level in downtown, which some data will be generated. Fifth, the development model, the space structure pattern and the strategy of the spatial development in future.
