Industrial expansion is the essential driving force of the urbanization of medium and small sized cities. It's also an important tool for the implementation of urban planning. In recent years, most cities have made a success in the fast development of industry and remarkable GDP growth by attracting investment. Consequently, it leads to problems like the structural imbalance and inefficiency in land use, the failure in planning control. In addition, affected by the macroeconomic policy changes and the financial crisis, cost of industrial production has raised which makes the investment attraction increasingly difficult. The further expansion of a city is confronted by more obstacles. As the "Twelfth Five-Year" plan launches, China is going to be into the industrial transition. Hence at this historic turning point it is particularly essential to re-scrutinize the impact of industrial development on urban expansion. This paper adopts a methodology of interdisciplinary research by using knowledge from Urban Planning, Urban Geography, Landscape Ecology and other related ones. It focuses on quantitative analysis of the potential relationship between industry spatial pattern evolution and urban spatial form development since 1996 in Gaomi city, using the tool of GIS spatial analysis. Based on this, it also discusses the mechanism of how patterns of industrial space act upon urban spatial structure. Finally it offers advice in promotion of urban industrial development and urban space optimization. The aim is for a city to achieve sustainable economic growth in urban industries and to expand industrial land expansion in a reasonable and effective way. It would be the most satisfactory achievement to fully produce the comprehensive benefits of scarce land resources and timely meet the needs of social development in urban space. In terms of industrial space pattern in the city, this paper makes a review on three aspects (industrial production, the working population and spatial density), based on a detailed survey on spatial distribution of industrial enterprises from 1996 to 2009 in Gaomi city. By adopting ArcGIS Software, it analyzes the spatial patterns of industrial evolution, which comes to a conclusion that the industry development in Gaomi city can be divided into three stages: gathering, diffusing and gathering.Furthermore, it discusses the impact of industrial spatial pattern process on inner and outer space of Gaomi. In the aspect of how a city's outer space being affected, this paper dose analysis from perspectives of time characteristics and spatial anisotropy of expansion in urban land. From the time perspective, the growth rate of industrial land largely determines the expansion intensity of urban land. And from the space perspective, the extension direction of industrial land remarkably affects that of urban land.In the aspect of impact on a city's inner space, this paper extrapolates from the process of urban land use, land space circle differentiation and morphological characteristics of the main function land, followed by three conclusions:the first is that expansion of industrial land should be put ahead of other land space expansion so that a sustainable financing and power can be offered; Secondly, the dominant wing of industrial land expansion mode leads to a mode in which residence and public facilities fill in the main city and lands for living and public use extends to the city edge in a fan-shaped way. There is an inconsistency between the extension direction of industrial land and that of land for other use; thirdly, the industrial land expansion results in the index of urban land diversity in main city decreases after a rise.In this part, quantitative methods are adopted for spatial analysis, with the use of ArcGIS software and statistical tools. When it comes to the land expansion anisotropy, Same-Fan-shaped Analytic method "(16 azimuth distribution method) is used; and the'ring system analysis method'is used for studying on the differentiation of spheres of space. In the end, based on the above analysis, the paper does researches on the development of industry, the control of outer urban space and optimization of inner urban space by analyzes the price of industrial expansion. Delightfully constructive ideas are recommended for urban planning and future industrial development.
