To be an emerging technology in the world dam engineering history, there are a lot ofrespects need to be supplemented and perfected about extrusion side wall, although it hasbeen used extensively in many engineerings of Construction of Rock-Fill Dam,especially, whether it can make the concrete face cracks because of increasing constraint,it has not beendefinitely concluded at present. In this study, concrete face sand-gravel dam has been analyzed by three-dimensionalnonlinear finite element method. The Duncan-Chang E-B constitutive model are programmedon the second development platforms UMAT offered by ABAQUS software. The course ofdam construction and water storing was simu1ated by using life-death element technique andrestart technique. The paper takes advantage of the ABAQUS to make three-dimensional nonlinear finiteelement analysis for a concrete face sand-gravel dam with extrusion side wall technology, theanalysis was computed respectively in to different cases: using extruded curb and withoutcurb, and both construction period and impoundment period are considered in calculationconditions, stress deformation appearance of the dam and concrete face status obtained by thecalculation. The results between different situations were compared and analyzed. The resultsshowed that extrusion side wall have little effect on the dam, but it improved stressdeformation behavior of concrete face,so,extrusion side wall is advantageous for concreteface. In this study,we analyzed the affect about extrusion side wall to concrete facesand-gravel dam,the result not only provide theoretical base for extrusion side walltechnology, but also provides abundant reference for engineering with this technology.
