After dozens of years of development, China’s air compressor technology has made great progress, and into many industrial production and social spheres of life, resulting in huge economic and social benefits. This paper proposes a new working principle air compressor-Ball Piston air compressor, and studies its operating characteristics.Ball Piston air compressor is a rotary positive displacement air compressor. It adopts axial flow, using a spherical ball piston as the compression component, can be continuous suction and exhaust. And it has a series of advantages, such as a simple and reliable structure, good dynamic balance property, easy to achieve high speed and large air capacity and so on. The paper introduces the basic structure and working principle of the ball piston air compressor at first, and summarizes their classification and application briefly. Then, the author establishes a mathematical model for a further study on its properties. The mathematical model helps to reveal the change rules of the gas parameters in rotor cylinder-bores cavity in the course of their work. And it also benefits to find out the answer that how some structural parameters effect on the working performance of the Ball Piston air compressor. It focuses on the dynamic changes of the gas pressure with the spindle rotation angle, and obtained simulation graph. What’s more, thanks to the Dynamic Mesh Method in Fluent software, fluid simulation on the simplified two-dimensional calculation model of the Ball Piston air compressor has been done. The graphs of the velocity vector, pressure contour and temperature contour at different times in suction and exhaust phases are obtained, and the influences on flow characteristics of the calculation model in different spindle speed is also considered. Finally, the paper puts forward the solutions about the running-test and air capacity test of the Ball Piston air compressor. And the running-test experiment of the prototype is done, the experiment data is recorded.The above theory study and experiment test have proved that the Ball Piston air compressor is feasible, and will have broad application prospects in power and automation control fields.
