The policy of building a new socialist countryside was brought forward in the6thPlenary Session of the15th CPC Central Committee in December of2005, delivering themessage of reform to the vast rural areas in China. The rapid progress of urbanization hasmade some positive difference to the environment of rural areas; however, due to a series offactors such as China’s large population base and high rural percentage, difficulties in freeingthe environment in the countryside from pollutions out of household refuse, traditionalfarming and modern industry still remain. Under these circumstances, landscape ecology hasemerged as an innovative and popular landscaping philosophy.At present, the construction of a new socialist countryside is proceeding at full capacity,with the speedy development of rural landscaping as part of the program. This paper studieshow to apply landscape ecology in the course of building a new countryside. Such anapproach emphasizes the combination of modern theories of ecological planning andcharacteristics of traditional landscaping in rural areas, in order to exhibit a brand-newecological appearance in the new countryside and construct a landscape that contains bothclassical and modern elements and highlights not only geographical features but also culturaluniqueness.The paper primarily researches about the current development of the landscapeconstruction of new socialist countryside and how landscape ecology came into being torespond to the new trend and new features of such development, presenting an objectiveanalysis of the reason for the emergence of landscape ecology and also the principles andmethods for carrying out this philosophy in the landscaping of new countryside, and, with thecase study of the ecological landscape in Wuyuan County in Jiangxi, provides some lessonsand reference for the construction of a new socialist countryside and specifically its landscaping.
