Arch Bridge with its own superior mechanical behavior,long span capacity, low cost, attractive appearance, and other advantages is widely used in civil engineering, especially in the western region. With the country’s transport development, the traffic of road and the increasing load of the vehicle, which is far beyond the design, result in the damage of roads and bridges. As a result of funds and other reasons, the bridges which were constructed in the1960s and1970s or1950s, are still operating. Arch bridge accounte for a large number in these bridges. The bridges which were main arch type, has been operating for decades,and the technical state of a large number bridges can not meet the increasing traffic safety and traffic needs.Because of limited financial and transport supply, it is impossible to reconstruct a large number,but to take less investment, short construction period,and the technical measures of bridge maintenance and reinforcement which can ease the current tension in the transport. How to reinforce an old bridge according to its specific conditions,choose reasonable reinforcement methods and use effective reinforcement technology is important.In this paper, Arch Bridge and the causes are analyzed, and introduced the reinforcement of arch bridge. Ren river bridge of Chongqing reinforcement project as an example, elaborated the principles of design calculations and construction methods of increasing section reinforcement method of arch bridges.
